When the Kai Lending Library first launched in November 2023, we want it to be more than a little free library - it represents a small act of kindness in the community — a place where stories, ideas, and compassion could be shared one book at a time.
After nearly three years of weather, sunshine, and more than 10,000 visitors, it was time for a little maintenance and care.
We want to preserve the original spirit of the library while making it easier to maintain for years to come. The artwork on the roof and door, beautifully hand-painted by our artist friend and board member Natacha, are to remain untouched. These elements are part of the library's history and heart, and preserving those original bones and saving the pawprints was important to us.
We had a detailed mural that brought a great deal of personality to the library. For the refresh, we chose to simplify the artwork to reduce future maintenance needs and make touch-ups easier. The new design is simpler: a dog and BK, both bundled up in cozy sweaters to welcome visitors year-round and the library is now painted in light color to minimize fading and sun damage during our hot summers.
But we are not done. “Be a Kahu” sits squarely above the door.
In Hawaiian culture, kahu means guardian, caretaker, steward, or honored attendant. It reflects a deep and sacred responsibility for something precious — whether that is a beloved animal companion, a cherished place, or a community. A kahu does not simply own or possess. A kahu protects, nurtures, and cares for something entrusted to them.
As visitors stop by the library to borrow a book, leave a book, or simply say hello, we hope those three words serve as a gentle reminder of the role each of us can play in caring for animals, our communities, and one another.
Be a Kahu.
